Person-centred approach

Identify the best way forward for each individual.  Some people will not be ready to take next steps.

Healthy Conversation Skills e-Learning. Make every contact count.

This free online learning will:

  • Increase your awareness of Healthy Conversation Skills and how they apply to your role

  • Increase your knowledge of prevention and lifestyle behaviours

  • Improve your knowledge of behaviour change

  • Increase your confidence to have a healthy conversation

  • Increase your awareness of local signposting options and resources

For the person-centred approach, during the consultation:

  • Ask about the person's view of their weight and the diagnosis, and possible reasons for weight gain.

  • Explore eating patterns and physical activity levels.

  • Find out what the person has already tried and how successful this has been, and what they learned from the experience.

  • Explore any beliefs about eating and physical activity and weight gain that are unhelpful if the person wants to lose weight.

  • Be aware that people from certain ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds may be at greater risk of obesity, and may have different beliefs about what is a healthy weight and different attitudes towards weight management.

  • Ask about the person’s priorities and how they feel about making changes.

  • Agree a plan that fits in with the person’s goals.
